MARINETTE, Wis.---The Marquette Blues American Legion baseball team wrapped up its play at the Firecracker Tournament in Marinette on Sunday the same way it started the event on Friday: with an error-filled loss.
The Blues made four more errors Sunday and lost to Watertown, 13-3. The Blues ended up making 20 errors in the four games they played in the tournament. They also gave up a whopping 46 runs in the tournament (only 24 of those 46 runs were earned).
"When you keep spotting these teams, that I feel we're better than, keep spotting them runs, and you get in a hole, it's hard to keep battling back," Marquette Manager Mark Pantti said. "Unfortunately, right now, we've got guys who are making mistakes, and they're carrying it with them wherever they go, whether it's in the box or in the field. We've got to clean up our defense."
The Blues on Saturday wasted a great effort at the plate from Gibson Jezewski in the 10-7 loss to Marinette.
Jezewski went 4-for-4 with five runs batted in, including a pair of two-run doubles, the last of which brought the Blues back from an error-induced deficit into a 7-7 tie in the sixth inning. Jezewski says he felt good at the plate during that game at Haase Field.
"It was a tough game all around," Jezewski said. "It felt great to bring us five runs and get us high up on the scoreboard. Our bats were going, so that felt great. I was working, middle-box, just because the pitcher wasn't as fast as what we'd seen. He was kind of all over the place, but the first pitch I was swinging consistently, and it worked out well."
Marquette ultimately lost that game after rallying to tie it at 7 when reliever Keith Judici uncorked a wild pitch with a man in scoring position, and the Blues committed another error while trying to get out of that inning.
Later, the Blues were blasted by the eventual tournament champion, Manitowoc, 18-2, as the power-hitting team rolled to ten runs in the top of the first inning against Marquette pitcher Dakota Maki.
On Sunday, the Blues tried to pick up at least one win on the way out of Marinette, but lost to Watertown, 13-3, in six innings.
It was a disappointing result for Marquette to go 0-4 in Marinette after they played so well last weekend in a tournament at Waupun, Wis., where the Blues made the championship game.
