MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, Calif. - The Northern Michigan University Alpine competed in the USCSA National Championships at Mammoth Mountain, California.
Due to large accumulations of snow, a majority of the events were canceled, but the team was able to compete in a rare one-run race of slalom. Despite the soft snow conditions that made racing quite difficult, the whole team performed incredibly well.
Coach Lundteigen was very proud of the entire team, and said although conditions worsened as the race went on, everyone brought their skills to the table.
Overall, the men's team took 3rd place, and the women's team took 2nd. The men were third to Castleton and Rocky Mountain College. The women's team was runner up to Rocky Mountain College. Out of 36 teams competing in the championship, this is a huge accomplishment.
Not only did the team collectively have four All-American finishers, but Reagan Olli took home the title of National Champion. She won the slalom, advancing to an overall combined title as well, given the one race, earning her a First Team All-American Award.
Ainsley Kirk took 10th to receive a Second Team All-American award, Aaron Grezlek took 6th and Bradley Seaborg took 11th both to also receive Second Team All-American.
Again both for slalom and overall combined. Coach Lundteigen was very excited to not only have made it to this National Championship, but show what the Midwest, and NMU, can do! Especially in such conditions. NMU has definitely shown up to make a mark on USCSA racing, at a national level, and Coach hopes to only see the team improve next season!
