MARQUETTE---The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education has decided to retire its Native Chief logo.
While the school has used a "Block M" instead of the Chief on its unforms for many years now, the decision to officially remove the chief emblem passed, 6-1, at Monday night's school board meeting.
The board also passed another motion with intent to expand education about indigenous cultures, respectfully retire the old logo, and seek out a new identity for district moving forward. There's no word on whether the nicknames "Redmen and Redettes" will be changed, as some in the community have suggested.
