ESCANABA---The Negaunee Miners tennis team improved to 9-1 on the season by beating the Escanaba Eskymos, 8-0. on Monday in Escanaba.
The Miners won seven of the eight matches in straight sets.
The only match to go three sets was at #3 doubles, when Escanaba's Maddy Mishica and Gracie Wickham lost to Negaunee's Shayla Williams and Madi Austin on a tiebreaker in the first set before bouncing back to win the second set, 6-4.
But Williams and Austin won the third set, 6-2.
"Good match against a good team," Escanaba Coach Chris Ogren said. "I believe they only have one loss this year, so we knew we were going to have some tough matches today. #3 doubles did a great job of taking a set. They’ve been getting a little bit better every meet.
"There isn’t a team in the conference that they can’t compete with, and they should have a great showing at the GNC tournament on Wednesday."
