MARQUETTE----The Escanaba High School wrestling team won the MHSAA district championship Wednesday night, beating Marquette, 48-30, and Sault Ste. Marie, 57-15, at Marquette High School. The Eskymos advance to the regionals in Gaylord.
Escanaba got a big win from Tyler Lawson, who beat Marquette's Griffin Moore with a third period takedown and reversal, 9-5. Lawson had dropped a 4-1 decision to Moore in the only previous meeting of the season. Escanaba's Hunter Larson continued to dominate, pinning Nic Swenor halfway through the first period. Larson now has 100 career wins.
Marquette led, 30-27, when Escanaba sophomore Noah Weaver pinned Marquette's Gideon Bell to give the Eskymos a 33-30 lead.
The Eskymos did not lose from there.
Earlier, Marquette's Joe Lagrou continued his fine season with a pin over Dawson Mayville. The wrestlers head to Gaylord on Saturday for the individual districts, then back to Gaylord for the team and individual regionals the following week.
