WATERFORD, Mich.---Escanaba High School senior bowler Lindsey Juhl made it all the way to the state championship match on Saturday before settling for the runner-up spot. Juhl won three matches Saturday at Century Lanes in the Detroit suburb of Waterford before dropping the title match to Omani Morales of Cedar Springs, 416-328.
Eskymo Coach Rick Neumann called it the best performance he has seen in his 24 years with Escanaba bowling. Juhl is the granddaughter of local racing legend Bob Iverson, who passed away late last year. She started Saturday's bracket roll-off play by defeating Katelyn Helden of Croswell-Lexington High School, 376-349.
Next, Juhl defeated Imari Blond of Flint Kearsley, 385-369. Blond had entered the final rounds as the top seed after qualifying rounds. Juhl had qualified eighth.
In her third match of the day, Juhl rolled past Emily Gurin of Dearborn Heights Annapolis High School, 425-331, in a tie-breaker, which set up her final six-game match.
The only other Eskymo girl, Dakota Cloutier, was 33rd in qualifying rounds, out of a field of 60 bowlers who qualified out of regionals. The top 16 of 60 advanced to roll-off games.
BOYS DIVISION TWO---There were also 60 boys in Division Two who qualified out of regionals, and the top 16 advanced to roll-off games. None of tjose 16 were from the U.P. in Division Two. Escanaba's Josh Worthen was 33rd in qualifying. Marquette's Keenan Johnson, was 44th in qualifying.
GIRLS DIVISION THREE---Ishpeming's Megan Wilkins qualified sixth at Northway Lanes in Muskegon. She won her first match Saturday over Karissa Manifold of Hillsdale, 413-374. In the quarterfinals, Wilkins beat Amy Jackson of Flat Rock High School, 440-323. But in the semifinals, the Hematite senior lost to Jenna Betts of Clare, 385-317.
