Eskymos Win D-1 Upper Peninsula Boys Golf Title

HARRIS---The Escanaba High School boys golf team won the MHSAA Division One Upper Peninsula championship on Thursday at the Sweetgrass Golf Club in Harris.

The Eskymos had three of the top eight golfers and outlasted Calumet by five strokes, 317-322, to win the title. The Gladstone Braves were third with 336 strokes.

Escanaba was led by Nathan Rousseau's 75, which was one stroke behind Gladstone's Rudy Peterson, who fired a 74 to win medalist honors.

The Eskymos also got strong performances from Brett McDonough (fifth overall with a 79), and Trevor Denome (tied for eighth with an 80), and it was that depth that carried them to the championship. Escanaba's Jaden Gravelle was 14th overall after shooting an 83.

Calumet's top golfer was Wyatt Tuoriniemi, who finished fourth with a 78.

Marquette's Jordan Jurmu took third spot individually with a 77. The Redmen finished fourth on the team scoreboard with 340, four strokes behind Gladstone.

Gladstone's Jordan Ahlgren finished tied for fifth with a 79, along with McDonough and Calumet's Tyler Johnson. Houghton's Jiseung Choi also cracked the top ten with an 80.

On the team scoreboard, Houghton (344) finished fifth, followed by Westwood (362), Kingsford (366),  Negaunee (374), and Iron Mountain (385).

Manistique rounded out the Top Ten with a team score of 389. L'Anse (394) was 11th and Ironwood finished 12th with a score of 408.
