JUMP FOR JOY: Menominee Going Back To States

HANCOCK---Last year's Michigan Class A state runner's up will be back at this year's state tournament when boys from around the state meet in Gladwin next week.

The Menominee Red Wave knocked off the Eastern U.P. Travelers out of Sault Ste. Marie, 7-3, Saturday, at the Zone Five Upper Peninsula Tournament in Hancock.

Menominee shook off a slow start to post its second win against one loss in the eight-team tournament. Sault Ste. Marie was eliminated after going 1-2.

Bryce Tharp went the distance on the mound for Menominee. Nathan Nowack had the exclamation point with a long two-run homer to left field in the seventh inning, turning a 5-3 nailbiter into a four-run advantage. Levi Kempka had an RBI triple.

On Sunday, Menominee lost to Copper Country, 6-4, to finish third in the Upper Peninsula Zone.

Menominee will face U.P. champion Gladstone on Thursday at Noon ET/11 a.m. CT in Gladwin.
