First US Olympic Transgender Athlete Is NMU Grad

RIO DEJANEIRO, Brazil---The nation’s first transgendered Olympic athlete has ties to the Upper Peninsula.

Chris Mosier is a triathlete…although at these games in Rio deJaneiro, the competition is a duathlon….which includes running, riding a bike, running again, and then swimming.

Mosier was a woman when he attended and graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2003. While at NMU, Mosier edited the school newspaper, hosted a radio show, played recreational sports, and was actually the university's mascot: Wildcat Willie.

Now, Mosier is breaking barriers as the first transgendered athlete. Rolling Stone Magazine did an article on him. Nike did a 30-second ad for NBC that features Mosier.

He is now the executive director of the support group : Go! Athletes. And according to his web site, Mosier is also the founder of transathlete.com, which is a resource for students, athletes, coaches, and administrators to find information about “trans-inclusion” in athletics at various levels of play. So, keep an eye out for Mosier as the Olympic Games continue.
