GLADSTONE---The Manistique Emeralds and Mother Nature had one thing in common on Thursday: neither could stop the Gladstone Braves girls softball team.
Gladstone spotted Manistique a run in the first inning, but dominated from there, posting a 16-2 victory at the Gladstone High School fields. The game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings due to the mercy rule, and after a 45-minute rain delay in the third inning.
This was the first game of a very large MHSAA Division Three district tournament, with nine teams included. The Braves will host another play-in game next Tuesday.
The second inning was a big one for the Braves, with Sam Sailer, Tasi Martinez, and Kaitlyn Hardwick all getting run-scoring singles. The inning was capped by a two-run homer off the bat of Taylor Hunter...and off the roof of a truck parked behind the fence.
The Braves' winning pitcher was Jenna Steinhoff. Bre Richer took the loss for Manistique.
