MARINETTE, Wis.---Elliot Danhoff pitched a shutout Saturday as the Gladstone Indians beat Pulaski (Wis.), 7-0, at the Marinette Firecracker Tournament. The Indians later lost to the Green Bay Shockers, 5-0, to fall to 1-2 in the weekend tournament.
Gladstone joined this tournament at the last minute when the Copper Country team dropped out due to a lack of players. The Indians showed up here missing three key players because of a basketball camp, but they had plenty to beat Pulaski.
Danhoff served notice right away that he would be tough to beat when he struck out two of the first three batters that he faced. And even though he hit a batter in the second inning, he easily plowed through the Pulaski batters through the early innings.
And, for a change, he got plenty of run support. Owen Hanson smacked a two-run double in the first inning, then Lucas Weinert smoked one over the left fielder's head for two more runs in the second inning. An error on a Tyson Seymour grounder made it a 5-0 game, and then the Tribe added two more runs in the third inning.
In the afternoon game, the Indians had trouble getting their bats going against a Green Bay team that had just finished up a ten-inning win over Escanaba. And it was the same Shockers team that the Indians beat last week, 6-3, in Gladstone.
This time, Hanson got the ball, and only made it two innings before giving way to Seymour on the hill. Hanson yielded a solo home run to Jarrett Schleek in the first inning and then allowed a two-run double by Kris Kastberg in the second inning.
Seymour did well on the mound, keeping the Shockers off the board for the next four innings, but Gladstone could not solve Green Bay pitcher Nick Baldschun. And whenever the Indians did get men on base, they couldn't stay away from the twin killing. The Shockers turned three double plays, ending the third, fourth, and fifth innings.
Green Bay added two unearned runs in the seventh inning to make it a 5-0 final.
Gladstone (3-6) finishes its play at the Firecracker Tournament on Sunday with a game against the host Marinette squad.
Game time is 2:00 ET/1:00 CT. The game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
