Cubs Outlast Polecats In Baseball Exhibition Game

ESCANABA---The Escanaba Cubs American Legion Baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Escanaba Polecats Wishigan League team, 7-6, Wednesday night at Al Ness Field.

The Cubs carried a 5-1 lead into the sixth inning before the Polecats scored five runs to take the lead. Tony Peacock's two-run single put the Polecats in front against Cubs pitcher Justin Popelka.

But Popelka was able to get the final out, stranding two base runners.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cubs took the lead. Bailey Lamb's sacrafice fly scored the tying run, then the go-ahead run came home when Brandon Punzel's ground ball was bobbled at shortstop.

Young stole second and advanced to third when the ball got away from the second baseman. But with two out, Skufca got Troy Taromina to foul out to end the game.

Jon Bintner pitched the first three innings for the Polecats, and Devin Olsen threw the fourth and fifth innings. Taromina threw the sixth inning and took the loss.
