Gremlin 'Man' Defense Ends Eskymo Playoff Hopes

ESCANABA---The Houghton High School girls basketball team played tough man-to-man defense Friday, forcing numerous Escanaba Eskymo turnovers in a 42-28 Gremlin victory in the Class B District championship game.

Escanaba had defeated Houghton in a regular season game a few weeks ago, and when the Eskymos upset Gladstone in the district semifinals earlier this week, there was hope that the Esky girls could take their Cinderella story below the bridge for the regionals.

But Coach Julie Flipus's Gremlins got balanced scoring and took care of the ball.

Michelle LaFave ended her Eskymo career on a high note. She led all scorers wth 20 points, and at one point, she had 16 of her team's 20 points.

LaFave will head to Houghton in the fall to attend school, and play hoops, at Michigan Tech University.

Houghton will face Kalkaska in the Class B regionals next Tuesday in Gaylord.
