Eskymos, Miners Battle In H.S. Football Scrimmage

ESCANABA---The Escanaba Eskymos and Negaunee Miners got in about an hour of work Friday as they get ready for the start of the high school football season.

The teams played a scrimmage at the Escanaba Athletic Field, with the Eskymos scoring six times and the Miners cracking the end zone three times.

"I thought it was a good look for us," Escanaba quarterback Logan Lamb said. "It was good to finally hit someone else. It was good to see another face, and now we know what to work on to get ready for next week. We've been working hard and getting better each day."

Corey McInerney scored two touchdowns, while Alec Slaga and C.J. Barron each scored once.

Lamb scored a rushing touchdown and hooked up with Chris LeMire for a passing score. The Eskymos used several different sets, including a no-huddle "spread" offense that seemed to have the Negaunee defense off-balance.

"I saw some good things," said Negaunee Head Coach Paul Jacobsen. "Obviously with a scrimmage, you're looking forward to hitting a different color. We've got some things to work on. We've got our bumps and bruises just like everyone does this time of year. We're just looking forward to starting the season now on a positive note."

Escanaba went 3-6 last season. The Eskymos open the new season next Thursday in Alpena.

Negaunee was 10-2 last season, losing in the third week of the playoffs. The Miners open the 2014 season next Friday night in Manistique.
