Braves Compete Well; Lose Opener To Marquette

GLADSTONE---The Gladstone High School girls tennis team opened its season Thursday with a 5-3 loss to the Marquette Redettes at Pfotenhauer Park.

The Braves won the top two singles flights and won at #1 doubles, but Marquette had more depth and won the match.

Gladstone's Lauren Parrett won at #1 singles, 7-6, 7-5, over Marquette's Maddie Connon. And at No. 2 singles, Gladstone's Bridget Becker fought through the first set to win on a tiebreaker, 7-6, and then took the second set froim Eliza Annelin, 6-1.

In the No. 1 doubles match, Gladstone's Paige Schwartz and Anna Caramella defeated Marquette's Amanda Gray and Mallory Grugin, 6-4, 6-0.

At No. 4 singles, Marquette's Christine Nestor defeated Gladstone's Kara Salo, 6-0, 6-3.

"I was happy with how we played," Gladstone Coach Hailey Reichel said. "Even the girls who lost, they competed well. It was a good start."

Gladstone is off until Monday, when the Braves host Escanaba. The Eskymos have won their first two matches of the season (6-2 over Marquette Wednesday, and 7-1 over Menominee on Thursday). Monday's match starts at 4:00 at Pfotenhauer Park.
