Marquette, Keweenaw Girls Fall In Championships

The Marquette Sentinels Under-16 girls hockey team and the Keweenaw Storm Under-19 girls were both heartbroken on Sunday as they played for national titles at the USA Hockey Tier II National Championships in Amherst, N.Y.

Marquette lost to Charles River, Mass., 2-1, while Keweenaw fell to Cape Cod, Mass., also by a 2-1 score. Both U.P. teams had gone undefeated through their tournament runs.

Marquette had defeated Charles River, 5-1, earlier in the tournament. Allison Carlson scored all five goals in that game. But in Sunday's final, the Massachusetts team kept Carlson off the scoreboard. Kirsten Iwanski scored Marquette's only goal.

Charles River's  Brenna Galvin scored the game-winner 9:41 into the third period. The Sentinels were outshot for the first time at Nationals, 35-24.

In the U-19 game, the Keweenaw girls had a simliar result. The Storm tied Sunday's game at 1-1 as Maybelline Beiring scored 20 seconds into the second period. But Cape Cod's Madsion Haberl scored the game-winner 9:42 into the third period.

Keweenaw had a 30-21 shots advantage in the game, but could beat goalie Madison Scavotto just once.


SATURDAY'S GAMES

The Marquette Sentinels Under-16 girls hockey team and the Keweenaw Storm Under-19 girls will both play for national titles on Sunday at the USA Hockey Tier II National Championships in Amherst, N.Y.

Marquette won its quarterfinal and semifinal games by identical 4-1 scores on Saturday, and will face Charles River, Mass., in Sunday's U-16 championship game. The Sentinels got three more goals from Allison Carlson in the quarterfinal win over the host Amherst team, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Marquette topped Potsdam, N.Y., 4-1.

Keweenaw needed two overtimes to win its quarterfinal game over Colorado Springs, 2-1. Jessica Schlaff scored the game-winning goal 2:20 into the second overtime.

Later, in the semifinal, the Storm rolled past the Buffalo Stars, 8-3. Alexis Pyykkonen had a goal and two assists in the victory. Keweenaw will face Cape Cod, Mass., in Sunday's U-19 national championship game.

As for the boys, the Marquette Royales U-20 team lost to the Boston Junior Bruins, 11-1, at their national tournament on Saturday in Connecticut. Marquette is now 0-3.


FRIDAY'S GAMES

The Marquette Sentinels Under-16 girls hockey team won for a third straight day on Friday at the USA Hockey Tier II National Championships in Amherst, N.Y.
 
Marquette beat Charles River, Mass., 5-1, as Allison Carlson scored all five Marquette goals. She has scored 14 goals in three games at the national tournament.

The Sentinels play in the national quarterfinals Saturday morning against the host team.
 
In the Under-19 bracket, the Keweenaw Storm beat Team Wyoming, 7-0, on Friday as Jessica Schlaff scored two more goals. The Copper Country girls are also 3-0.

As for the boys, the Marquette Royales U-20 team lost to Team New Hampshire, 8-2, in their national tournament on Friday in Connecticut. Marquette is 0-2 in the tournament.


THURSDAY GAMES

The Marquette Sentinels Under-16 girls hockey team won for a second straight day on Thursday at the USA Hockey Tier II National Championships in Amherst, N.Y.

Allison Carlson had five goals and two assists as Marquette beat Princeton, N.J., 9-0, to improve to 2-0 in the tournament.

In the Under-19 bracket, the Keweenaw Storm beat Princeton, N.J., 4-1, as Jessica Schlaff had two goals and an assist. The Copper Country girls are also 2-0.
 
As for the boys, the Marquette Royales U-20 team lost to the Helena, Mont., Bighorns, 6-2, in their national tournament opener Thursday in Connecticut.
