ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School hockey team put the wraps on the 2013-14 season Tuesday night with its awards banquet at the House of Ludington.
Levi Wunder, who led the team with 40 goals and 28 assists for 68 points, walked away with the team's Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year trophies.
Eskymo senior captain Derek Chaillier was given the Defensive Player of the Year award.
Wunder and Chaillier also recieved their awards for being named to the Division Two All-State First Team, the first two Eskymos ever to get that kind of recognition.
Four Eskymos were honored as Division Two All-State Academic First Team selections: Nick LeMire, Steve Wood, T.J. Myrick, and Chaillier.
And as a team, the Eskymos were honored as amongst the best in the state in Division Two with a 3.25 grade point average.
Other team awards: Steve Wood got the "MikeyD Character" award and Nick LeMire got the Academic Award for his stellar 3.92 grade point average over the past four years.
Jeff Lyle got the "Little I" award for his dedication to the team, and freshman Chris LeMire got the "Player of Tomorrow" award.
Eskymo players were also given their certificates for being selected to the Great Lakes Hockey Conference All-Conference Teams. Wunder, Chaillier, and Nick LeMire were first team selections, while Wood and sophomore Calvin Pinar got honorable mention nods.
"Our goal was to make every one of these kids a better hockey player," Eskymo Coach Matt Hughes said. "With our coaching staff, I believe that we acheived that."
Overall, Escanaba was one of the top-ranked teams in the state throughout the year in Division Two, finishing with a 16-8-3 record. The Eskymos lost, however, in the regional semifinals to Marquette, 2-1, in double overtime.
