Escanaba Bowlers Break Through On State Level

WATERFORD, Mich.---The Escanaba High School girls bowling team made school history Friday, advancing to the Division Two state semifinals for the first time ever.

The girls lost to top-seeded Flint Kearsley, but still celebrated a successful season.

Competing in the Division Two state tournament (amongst 18 teams) for the first time, Escanaba rolled 3,068 pins.

That gave the Eskymos the fifth seed amongst the eight teams that qualified to move on at the famed Century Lanes in the Detroit suburb of Waterford.

Escanaba faced fourth-seeded Charlotte in the quarterfinals, and won, 1292-1211. The scores were 198-151, 196-179, and 853-850.

But in the semifinals, Escanaba lost to Flint Kearsley, 1292-1211. The scores were 201-222, 178-178, and 913-811. Flint Kearsley went on to win the state championship.

Leading the scoring for the Eskymos was Cathy Pomeroy, with high games of 235 and 206. She averaged a 209. Jenna Larson averaged 181.

Senior Taylor Cordy averaged a 164, freshman Maria Backlund averaged a 162, and sophomore Trisha Neumann averaged a 150.

Pomeroy and Larson will both compete in the D2 "individual" state finals on Saturday.


ISHPEMING GIRLS STATE RUNNERS UP---The Ishpeming High School girls bowling team finished as state runners-up on Friday, falling to Croswell-Lexington, 1190-1082. The finals match scores were 171-163, 163-137, 856-782.

Ishpeming was led by Kassy Harsila with a 190. Katlynne Carlson rolled a 165, Kassey KyLola had a 138, and Kaylee O'Connor shot a 127 in that final match.

Ishpeming had qualified as the sixth seed out of 18 teams, with 2,931 pins.

In the quarterfinals, Ishpeming beat third-seeded Coloma, 1152-1130.

In the semifinals, Ishpeming topped seventh-seeded Flat Rock, 1208-1080.
