SAULT STE. MARIE---The Gladstone High School volleyball team began the 2013 season on Saturday by splitting four matches at a tournament in Sault Ste. Marie. The Braves beat the host Blue Devils and Rudyard, but lost to Brimley and Rogers City.
Gladstone beat the Soo, 2-0 (22-20, 21-12) but then fell to Brimley by that same score (21-13, 21-18). In the third match of the day, the Braves beat Rudyard, 23-22 and 21-11.
In the bracket portion of the tournament, Gladstone lost to Rogers City, 2-0 (25-20, 25-20). To which Gladstone Head Coach Liz Gendron said:
"We lost some steam going into bracket play, it seemed," she said. "We had a nice come from-behind-set against the Sault. (But) we could not get a rally in either set against Brimley. Our serving percentage was very poor. A lot of free points given away."
As the Braves head forward in the season, Gendron says her girls have things to improve upon. "We need to work hard on this week on defense, and our transitions," she said. "We have some great hitters and an outstanding setter so once we strengthen our passing skills success will follow."
The Escanaba Eskymos also competed in the Soo Invitational on Saturday, but their scores were not reported to us.
Some of Gladstone's tournament statistics are posted below.
