GLADSTONE---They had to wait about 46 hours to do it, but the Gladstone Indians beat the Marquette Blues to claim second place in the Mid Pen League standings.
In a game that was suspended by rain Tuesday night, the Indians jumped on the Blues quickly Thursday and posted a 6-0 win at Don Olsen Field.
When the rains came Tuesday, Gladstone had a 1-0 lead and Justin Jurek was at the plate with the bases loaded. They started the game at that point Thursday night, and the Indians went on a hitting spree to quickly end the supsense that usually comes with a 1-0 game.
Jurek started things off with an RBI single, and it was contagious. Cody Frazer, Hunter Garling, and Hayden Hardwick all got run-scoring hits.
That was all the Indians needed offensively, as Jurek set the Blues (27-15 overall) down in order for three straight innings.
Jurek pitched with just the one day rest, but finished what he started, earning the shutout in a key Mid Pen Conference game.
With the win, Gladstone avoided a second place tie with Kingsford in the league standings. That means that the Indians (20-13-1 overall) get the #2 seed, and will join top-seeded Marquette with a bye in this weekend's conference tournament in Channing.
The Indians and Blues will watch on Saturday as Kingsford, Hancock, Channing, and Ishpeming play quarterfinal games early in the day.
