ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School tennis team lost several close matches and fell to the Marquette Redmen, 5-3, Monday in Escanaba.
The Redmen won all four doubles matches to win the team score, with a three-set victory at #1 doubles clinching the win for Marquette.
"We looked rusty," Eskymo Coach Jim Hansen said. "We had an off day. We're still missing one of our key guys in the lineup (Steve Wood, family emergency). We're still figuring out where guys are going to fit in."
"We still have lots of work to do."
Escanaba won three of the four singles matches, with T.J. Myrick shaking off a rough second set to defeat Mike Wiitala, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Across the way at #1 doubles, Jake Eastin and Dave Fix have had a great season, but on this day, it just wasn't clicking for the two seniors.
Marquette's Mike Edwards and Matt Collins won the first set, 6-4, and had the lead in the second set before Eastin and Fix rallied to tie the match, 6-4. But all of the energy that the Eskymo duo had used to get back into the match showed in the third set, as the Redmen won, 6-0.
Escanaba's Dominic Aos won a three-set match at #4 singles, but John Brant was dumped at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Mike Sheilds had an easy 6-1, 6-1 win at #2 singles.
"Our guys are giving great effort. Our seniors are playing hard," Hansen said. "John Brant is playing well, he's just running into some stout competition. Shields has been solid all year."
"For the most part we're playing good tennis."
Hansen says that his assistant coaches, former Eskymos Luke and Chris Ogren, are providing a lot of help to the boys as the line-up continues to be switched around.
