Pearson, Rapid River Roll To 74-42 Win Downstate

BELLAIRE, Mich.---Jake Pearson ran for four touchdowns and threw for three more scores as he led the Rapid River High School football team to a 74-42 win over the Bellaire Eagles Friday night in Lower Michigan.

Rapid River finished the regular season with a 9-0 record, and is ranked #1 in the State of Michigan. The Rockets will play at home next weekend as the state playoffs begin.

"We're 0-0 heading into the playoffs," Rapid River Coach Steve Ostrenga said. "Anything can happen. We need to work hard this week (in practice) on everything that we do."

On Friday, Pearson did what he usually does.

On the ground, he carried the ball 37 times and tallied 290 yards. Pearson scored four touchdowns, on runs of 2, 3, 7, and 34 yards. Rapid River led early, 16-0, but the Eagles closed briefly to within 16-14.

Pearson was also on his game in the air. He completed 13 of 18 passes for 215 yards and three more touchdowns. He hooked up three times with Josh Parrett for 85 yards, including a 34-yard touchdown pass and catch.

Pearson also threw two touchdown passes to Pat Pryal. Pryal ended up with four catches for 98 yards, including those TD receptions of 23 and 19 yards from Pearson.

"Jake scrambled, and bought time, bought time," Ostrenga said on the TD that put his Rockets on the board. "He found Pat wide open in the end zone. That was a big play."

On the ground, Pryal also had 80 yards on 19 carries and a rushing touchdown.

David Hough had seven carries for 27 yards on the ground, and he had four catches in the air for 26 more yards.

And junior varsity call-up Mason Berglund had a pair of touchdown runs of six and one yards for the Rockets.

Ostrenga is happy with the dedication he has seen from his guys this season.

"When you go into a season, you never know what's going to happen," Ostrenga said. "It's a tribute to what these guys have done. They put it the time during the off-season back in the summer, and that's why I think that we're so good."

Rapid River will host a state playoff game next Friday night in Rapid River.

We will find out the opponent on Sunday. The game will be broadcast on WGKL-FM (105.5), WCHT-AM (600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
