Eskymos Finish Runners-Up At GNC Tennis Meet

KINGSFORD---The Kingsford Flivvers tennis team won Great Northern Championships in seven of the eight flights and cruised to the GNC team title Wednesday in Kingsford.

The Escanaba Eskymos, meanwhile, finished a strong second in the team score, getting three doubles teams to the finals. Two other girls made the semifinals in singles.

The Flivvers won the team score with 47 points, while the Eskymos were second with 31.

Marquette was third with 28 points, Menominee took fourth (24), and Gladstone finished fifth (22).  West Iron County finished in last place with 17 points.

Kingsford got GNC championships from Hannah Tresedder, Janay Walters, Santina Bianco, and Katy Hicks.

Three of the Flivver doubles teams won GNC title.

The Flivvers were stopped short of a clean sweep by the Eskymos' #3 doubles team of Emily LaFave and Olivia LaForest. The duo defeated Kingsford's Megan VanPembrook and Taylor Jacobson, 7-5, 7-5.

The Escanaba #1 doubles team of Shelby Gregoire and Olivia Berquist won their first set over Anna Shanks and Kate Lamy, 6-4. But the Flivver girls won the next two, 6-4, 6-4.

Escanaba's #2 doubles team of Audrey Wilson and Breanna Dault also lost in the finals.

Escanaba's #1 singles, Johanna Snowden and #4 singles Hannah Beversluis both finished in third place.

Gladstone, meanwhile, got two girls to the GNC finals at #2 and #3 singles. Both Lauren Parrett and Bridget Becker lost in straight sets to their Kingsford opponents.

4. Katy Hicks (Kingsford) def. Allison Odea (Menominee) 6-3, 1-6, 6-4; Third Place— Hannah Beversluis (Escanaba).

1. Anna Shanks-Kate Lamy (Kingsford) def. Olivia Berquist-Shelby Gregoire (Escanaba) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4; Third Place— Brianne Buhl-Taylor Rovin (Marquette).

2. Ali VanRemortel-Jaelyn Jennings (Kingsford) def. Audrey Wilson-Breanna Dault (Escanaba) 6-4, 6-4; Third Place— Amanda Gray-Mackenzie Verbeke (Marquette).
