Gladstone Wins Title; Other U.P. Teams Eliminated
The MHSAA Softball and Baseball Regional Tournaments were held on Saturday across Michigan. The weather cooperated, mostly, for the Upper Peninsula's teams, except for the Escanaba Eskymos, who played in the rain in Cadillac (see story HERE ). GLADSTONE BRAVES DO IT AGAIN---The Gladstone Braves won another regional softball championship on Saturday in Traverse City. The Braves topped Boyne City, 8-2, in the semifinal, and then beat Tawas, 4-1, in the championship game. That sets up a state quarterfinal game between the Braves and Unionville-Sebewaing, also in Traverse City, on Tuesday. The USA Patriots are 33-3, and won their regional championship over St. Charles, 13-0, on Saturday. CLICK HERE to read more. USA has outscored its four opponents, 52-0, in the districts and regioanls. That quarterfinal game will start at 3:00 Tuesday at Traverse City West High School. Gladstone is ranked fifth in the state, Unionville is ranked third. In Saturday's regional opener, Jordan Kowalski hit a home run and Tinner Sharon (two innings) and Alison Austin (five innings) shared the pitching duties. In the title game, Austin threw all seven innings as the Braves beat Tawas in the regionals for the third straight year. Lexi Hongisto had two hits in the championship game for Gladstone (28-1). RAPID RIVER ROCKETS START STRONG, BUT...---The season ended for the Rapid River Rockets softball team on Saturday. The girls beat Rudyard in the Division Four regional semifinals in Sault Ste. Marie, 15-5, but then lost to Rogers City in the championship game, 6-3. In the opener, Rapid River won the game in six innings as Neena Brockway, Dominque Pavlat, and Savannah Stenlund all hit home runs. Brockway earned the pitching win, fanning 12 batters. In the title game, the Rockets led, 3-1, in the fifth inning, after Averi Kanyuh hit a home run. But the Hurons got to Brockway in the bottom of the fifth with five runs, including back-to-back home runs, to end Rapid River's season. Rogers City was ranked third in the state while Rapid River was ranked tenth. The Rockets finished with an 18-15 record.
