Eskymos, Braves, Rockets Softball Have Busy Day

ESCANABA/TAWAS---The Escanaba High School girls softball team went for more than a month without playing a game this spring. But the girls quickly made up for lost time by playing twelve games in the past five days, including four games on Saturday.

The Eskymos beat Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette and Rapid River, then lost a tight game to Neenah (Wis.) at the Escanaba Invitational at Lemmerand Park.

Perhaps the most exciting game was Escanaba's first game against the Sault, when the Eskymos fell behind, 7-3, in the middle innings. But the girls came back, using a home run by Jenn Koish and a shot off the top of the fence by Emily Bogaudo to win, 10-7.

Jayme Frappier came on in relief of Callie Heller to earn the pitching win, then Frappier threw a strong game as the Eskymos topped the Rapid River Rockets, 5-1.

Speaking of the Rockets, Neena Brockway was overpowering in the circle against the Cheboygan Chiefs. Brockway allowed just two hits, and struck out a school record 19 girls as the Rockets won, 9-0.

Later, Savannah Stenlund had the complete-game shutout in the circle as the Rockets turned back the Traverse City Central Trojans, 4-0.

Escanaba is now 12-5 on the season. Rapid River is now 12-14.

The Braves then turned back Birch Run, 6-1, as Sharon and Depuydt each threw three innings. In the semifinals, Gladstone blanked New Boston Huron, 3-0, as Sharon threw all seven innings.

In the championship game, Gladstone scored six runs in the second inning and beat the Tawas Braves, 7-3. Sharon threw two innings, Depuydt pitched the third, fourth, and part of the fifth inning. Then Sharon had to come back to finish the game.

"She did a good job today," Braves Coach Jerry Smith said about Sharon. "She worked hard and picked us up when we needed her."

Gladstone pitcher Alison Austin missed the tournament to attend a wedding.
