All-UP Boys Basketball Award-Winners Announced

MARQUETTE---The Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association has released its list of the region’s top high school boys basketball teams, coaches, and players. A group of 18 reporters from every corner of the U.P. met at Northern Michigan University on Monday to come up with the awards list. The list was released Friday night.

The Marquette Sentinels and Kingsford Flivvers were selected as co-teams of the year on a 9-9 vote among the reporters in attendance. Marquette’s Jacob MacPhee won a three-way race for Division 1-2 Player of the Year over Kingsford’s Gavin Grondin and Iron Mountain’s Oskar Kangas. All three easily made the Dream Team.

MacPhee, who has signed to play basketball at Michigan Tech University, was named Mr. Basketball for the Upper Peninsula.

The Westwood Patriots, who advanced to the state semifinals, was named the Division Three Team of the Year, and the Forest Park Trojans, who also played at the Breslin Center, was named Division Four Team of the Yeat. Kingsford’s Ben Olsen and Pickford’s Tracey Peterson were named Coach of the Year for their respective divisions.

In Division Four, Vic Giuliani of the Forest Park Trojans was named Player of the Year. He also landed a spot on the Dream Team.

UPSSA President Mike Ludlum was satisfied with how things went.

“We had teams that were evenly-matched in different divisions,” Ludlum said. “You had players from opposite ends of the U.P. that were kind of hard for us to get into a pecking order. In some cases, the decisions were easy (Lillie Johnson), and some, we had to check and double-check our (voting) totals to see if things went right.”

The All-U.P. lists are posted below.
