NMU Men Lose But Clinch Share Of GLIAC Title
![]() This story was written by NMU Sports Information DETROIT - The Northern Michigan men's basketball team (20-8, 13-3) fell at Wayne State (12-14, 6-11) by a 84-80 margin on Saturday afternoon. The 'Cats have earned at least a share of the GLIAC regular season title with a Lake Superior State loss on Saturday as well, but Northern will look to win it outright at home on Thursday against the Grand Valley State Lakers. The last time the Wildcats won at least a share of the regular season crown was in 1992-93. The Warriors jumped ahead 45-37 after the first half behind a strong 17-28 (60.7%) shooting performance. Back-to-back threes from Carson Smith and Riley Brooks gave NMU an early 10-6 lead eight minutes in, but that was the largest lead the visitors would see. WSU stretched its lead to double figures five minutes into the second half and held its largest lead at 63-49 with 11:20 to play. NMU battled back, closing it to single digits on a few different occasions. A Smith three made it 78-72 with 46 seconds to play and that was as close as NMU would get outside of Smith hitting another three to end the game. The guards led the way for NMU, with Smith scoring 22 and Brian Parzych adding 19. Dylan Kuehl ( 14) and Riley Brooks (11) also found double figures. Wayne's Colin Golson Jr. scored a career-high 27 points on 10-14 shooting to lead the Warriors. The Warriors shot 29-52 (55.8%) from the floor, tying a season-worst field goal percentage given up by the Wildcats. NMU was 29-64 (45.3%) on the afternoon, but an effective 10-21 (47.6%) from three to keep them in the game. Northern will look to win the outright GLIAC regular season title at the Berry on Thursday, February 29th at 7:30 p.m. against Grand Valley State. |
