Michigan Tech Smacks Shorthanded NMU Wildcats
![]() This story was written by NMU Sports Information HOUGHTON, Mich. - Without its top scorer in Max Weisbrod, the Northern Michigan men's basketball team fell short at Michigan Tech on Saturday afternoon, falling 80-69. Leading 37-32 at the half, the Wildcats were outscored 48-32 in the second half. The Huskies shot 17-28 (60.7%) from the floor and 8-11 (72.7%) from three in the final 20 minutes. In comparison, NMU shot 11-25 (44.0%) in the closing 20 minutes. In the game, Tech made its difference from deep, connecting on four more threes than the 'Cats. NMU dominated second chance points, 15-0, but only collected two bench points to Tech's 17. Carson Smith paced the Wildcats with 20 points on an impressive 8-11 shooting. Dylan Kuehl (14), Riley Brooks (13), and Sam Privet (11) also reached double figures for the Green and Gold. MTU's Marcus Tomashek scored 20 points in the second half and 34 in the game to lead all scorers. The Wildcats started hot, jumping ahead 12-4 before the game's first media timeout. The Huskies responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game, but the Wildcats fought back and held two instances of nine-point leads in the first half before a 37-32 lead at intermission. Seven minutes into the second half, Tech took the lead and despite Northern keeping it largely within one possession until the final minutes, the Huskies never relinquished the lead after that. The loss drops the Wildcats to 19-7 overall and 12-2 in conference play. With four regular season games left, the Wildcats still hold a two-game lead over second-place Lake Superior State at 10-4. NMU will head out on the final road trip on the GLIAC slate next week, visiting Saginaw Valley State on Thursday and Wayne State on Saturday. |
