GREEN BAY, Wis.---In its final exhibition action of the preseason, the Northern Michigan women's basketball team fell at Division I UW-Green Bay 63-56 on Wednesday night. The large majority of the contest was played within a possession or two, with the Wildcats holding multiple leads in each quarter. A late 10-0 run from the Phoenix created some separation. Northern started red-hot, connecting on its first five shots from the floor, leading to a 12-7 lead on the Phoenix at the game's first media stoppage. Kayla Tierney and Jacy Weisbrod splashed in shots from downtown to open the scoring, while Sarah Newcomer, Makaylee Kuhn, and Mackenzie Holzwart also got on the board early. NMU was empty on the next five shots to close the quarter, and Green Bay responded with a 6-0 spurt, holding a slim 13-12 edge after 10 minutes. A 15-14 second quarter for the Wildcats resulted in the score all-square at 27 at the half. It was a dominant second quarter for Kuhn, as she dropped 10 of NMU's 15 points for a dozen at the break. The Phoenix opened the game up a bit in the third quarter, starting with their defense. NMU was empty from the floor for the first seven minutes of the frame and faced a 39-32 deficit before connecting on back-to-back shots to close the margin. A Newcomer triple late helped close the gap to one-score, 43-41, through three quarters. Northern regained the lead at 46-45 with just under seven minutes left in the game on a triple from Braelyn Torres. UWGB took the lead right back next trip down the floor, and wouldn't relinquish it. A 10-0 spurt helped put NMU away, as UWGB took the exhibition victory 63-56. The Wildcats will open up regular season play at the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge on November 10 and 11 at Michigan Tech with matchups against Lewis and William Jewell. |
