ESCANABA---Home, sweet home.
The Bay College Norse women's volleyball team continued to enjoy the home cooking Wednesday night as the Norse won another home match, beating fellow Upper Peninsula opponent Gogebic Community College, 3-0, at the Bay College Gym.
The scores were 25-20, 25-15, and 25-23. It was the third win of the season for the Norse over the Samsons, and it improved Bay's home court record to 6-1. The overall season record for the Norse went above the .500 mark at 10-9.
Gwinn High School graduate Tianna Taylor had another standout performance, following her effort against North Central Michigan College with a career-high 11 kills Wednesday night.
Taylor had an especially strong third set as Bay rallied from a 12-9 deficit to complete the three-game sweep.
“I think we all showed up ready to play,” Taylor told RRN”s Grace Harlow after the match. “We knew it was going to be a tough game. They're a great defensive team, and we just had a good night. We showed up ready to play, and it showed. We have a great team chemistry. We just have a group of girls who want to win and play hard. We drive each other and we want to get better every day.”
Menominee graduate Piper Monroe was tough in the middle row, joining Taylor om the corner with some powerful spikes.
“We were fortunate to get freeballs, so our sets were good,” Monroe said. “We really smacked the ball down tonight.”
Madison Johnson was one of the players who did the “dirty work” of setting the ball for the hitters like Taylor, Olyvia Saxton, Leah Allan, and Monroe, to smack down.
“I think we were really good at communicating when we got out of control,” the freshman from Florence, Wis., said. “We just really put the ball down. I think we really used what we like to do in practice. We just practice different situations and just get the ball over the net.”
The Samsons, in their first year of reviving volleyball at the Ironwood school, fell to 3-5 on the season. Three of those losses have come to the Norse.
Bay College (10-9 overall) will continue its homestand with a match this Saturday against Milwaukee Area Technical College. It is scheduled to start at 1:00. The Norse have eight matches remaining in the regular season, with four at home and four away.
