Indians, Blues Earn Legion Wins; Cubs Lose In 8

The Gladstone Indians American Legion baseball team hung on to earn a win in Wisconsin Friday night, while the Marquette Blues won on a walk-off and the Escanaba Cubs lost a wild game in Sault Ste. Marie.

GLADSTONE INDIANS 5, FOND DU LAC LAKERS 4---In Antigo Friday night, the Indians led, 5-0, entering the final inning as Tyler Darmogray tossed six shutout innings. But an error in the seventh inning deprived Darmogray of the shot at a complete game, and the Indians had to hold on as Fond duLac scored four runs on a pair of two-run hits after two were out.

Gladstone took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI triple by Braden Sundquist, and it stayed that way until the fifth inning. Johnny Soderman came through with an RBI single to bring in the second run, then Caden Alworden's infield single brought in a third run.

It was 5-0 and Darmogray was cruising, but a walk and an error on a ground ball to Noah Peterson at third base put two men on. Darmogray struck out the next batter, but reached his pitch count, so Sundquist came in in relief. He struc out the next batter for the second out.

Connor Klapperich got a two-run single to bring Fond duLac to within 5-2, and then Brayden Elgenbrandt doubled to bring in two more runs. Sundquist was able to get a fly ball to end the game.

Darmogray threw 6 1/3 innings and struck out ten batters, walking four, allowing five hits, and the three runs against him were all unearned.

EUP WOOD DUCKS 11, ESCANABA CUBS 10---In Sault Ste. Marie, the Escanaba Cubs rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to tie the EUP Wood Ducks, and then scored four runs in the top of the eighth to take a commanding 10-6 lead. But in the bottom of the eighth, two costly errors and four straight hits helped the Wood Ducks score five times and take a 11-10 win.

Eli Gardner threw seven innings for the Cubs, allowing seven hits and six runs, but only three of the runs against him were earned. He also hit two batters. Ben Johnson took the loss, giving up all five runs in the eighth inning, with only two of those earned.

Bon LaChance had four hits in five at-bats at the plate, with two singles, a double, and a triple, just a home run shy of the cycle. Adrian Mercier had two hits and drove in three runs, and Gardner had the big two-run single in the eighth inning that gave the Cubs a 8-6 lead.

For the Wood Ducks, Ethan Chambers, andAvery Wilson both had two hits, while Matt Lumsden and E.J. Suggitt both drove in a pair of runs. Josh Lumsden earned the pitching win despite allowing the four Cubs runs in the top of the eighth inning.

MARQUETTE BLUES 5, NORTHERN MICHIGAN PATRIOTS 4---In Sault Ste. Marie, the Marquette Blues continued to struggle defensively Friday night, making four more errors, but they managed to pull out a 5-4 win over the Northern Michigan Patriots out of Charlevoix.

The Blues got a single, double, and two runs batted in from Gibby Jezewski, and Easton Miller added a double and scored a run. Jezewski's RBI double in the fifth inning tied the game for Marquette, and then the winning run was scored by Dallas Cobe on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Patriots also made three errors on defense.

It was a good pitching effort for Brenton Balenger, who threw all six innings for the Blues, allowing only four base hits. Three of the four runs against him were unearned. He struck out seven batters, walked four, and hit one batter.
