SATURDAY NIGHT GAME RECAP

MARQUETTE, Mich. -
The NMU hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to Bemidji State on Saturday, resulting in a series split.

Each team scored in the first as Joey Larson got the tally for NMU, while the game remained 1-1 going to the third. The Beavers scored three in the third to skate away with the 4-1 win.

NMU is now 8-6 on the season and 4-2 in the CCHA.

The Beavers took the first trip to the box of the night, a roughing call with 16:39 to go. Despite a couple of rips on net from Joey Larson and AJ Vanderbeck, the Beavers killed it off.

The Wildcats then hit the box with Connor Eddy getting whistled for an elbowing call. In the final seconds of the man advantage, Bemidji State got their first goal of the weekend from Will Magnuson.

Joey Larson got the answer for the Wildcats with 7:03 to go, gathering a loose puck and taking to the backhand to light the lamp. Papp and Shlaine got the apples.

With 30 seconds left, Vanderbeck got tagged with a hooking call. NMU fought off the front-end of the penalty to end the period.

NMU led in shots on goal 7-6 through the first.

The 'Cats started the second killing of 75% of a minor penalty that carried over from the first period.

After some consistent time with no whistle, NMU went to the box for a slash with 13:23 to go, taking to PK for the third time of the night. Northern again fought it off.

The Wildcats possessed the puck for much of the remainder of the period. Despite several looks in the offensive zone, the game remained 1-1 after 40 minutes.

NMU led in shots 16-11 through the 2nd.

Just 30 seconds into the period, the Beavers grabbed the lead on a shot from Will Zmolek that deflected off the iron and into the net.

NMU got the chance to get the goal back at the 12:29 mark, as BSU went off for their second penalty of the night, this time in a tripping variety. Several good looks fell just short and Bemidji returned to full strength as the clock neared halfway through the period.

The Beavers stretched that lead to 3-1 with 7:14 to go on a goal from Alexander Lundman. A few minutes later, Jere Vaisanen made it 4-1.
  • Freshman Joey Larson scored the Wildcats lone goal and his fourth of the season, giving him two points on the weekend.
  • Artem Shlaine (6) and Kristoff Papp (4) both registered assists, giving them three points each on the weekend.
  • Alex Frye was 13/18 on faceoffs and Artem Shlaine was 12/14.
