Bay College Volleyball Goes 2-1 On Minnesota Trip

This story was written by Bay College SID Mike Pankow

The Bay College Norse Volleyball Team (7-6) ended up taking two out of three matches on their trip to Minnesota this past weekend.

After beating Anoka-Ramsey 3-2 in a thrilling five set match, the Norse swept Dakota County Technical College before falling to a very good Century College team.

The Norse found themselves locked in a battle with the Golden Rams on their home court.  After dropping the first set, Bay took a 2-1 lead with 25-17 and 25-22 wins.  Anoka-Ramsey evened up the tally by taking the fourth.  The Norse used a strong service run by Emma Rutter (FR, Chatham, MI) led to a dominating 15-4 final set victory.

Leah Allan
(FR, Oconto, WI) led the Norse with 11 kills and had 15 digs.  Rutter and Kylee Tadisch (FR, Coleman, WI) each had nine kills.  Tori Jandt (FR, Peshtigo, WI) finished with 25 digs and Alissa Sanville (FR, Gladstone, MI) ended with 17.  Amber Caylor (FR, Wausaukee, WI) tallied 44 assists and 11 digs.

Bay then participated in the Dakota County Technical College Triangular and opened it by sweeping the host team in three straight sets. After winning a close 25-21 set to start the match, the Norse found themselves down 13-2 in the second.

Bay swung momentum back to their side by coming back from the big deficit, outscoring their opponent 22-9 to take the second set by a final of 25-22.  The tremendous comeback set the tone for the third set as Bay cruised to a 25-16 victory to round out the match.

Tadisch led the attack with nine kills.  Jandt tallied 20 digs, while Sanville ended with 14 digs.  Caylor had 24 assists.

In the final matchup the Norse faced a team that is ranked eighth in the latest NJCAA Division 3 poll.

Head Coach Dan Porath called it "a tough three set loss. It did provide us with a strong team who has a quick offense, similar to what we will see on Friday and Saturday with Muskegon and Grand Rapids."

Century College would take the match with set scores of 25-16, 25-16, and 25-21.

Jandt and Allan were the defensive leaders for Bay with Jandt picking up 14 digs and Allan collecting 13.  Bay's offense struggled to find some consistency against the strong opponent, and they ended with a negative attack percentage.  Tadisch put up five kills in 17 attempts, which led the team with a .294 attack percentage.

The Norse will open conference play this coming weekend at home.  On Friday they host Muskegon Community College at 6:30 pm.  On Saturday Grand Rapids Community College is in town for a 1 pm match.
