GAYLORD---
The Escanaba Cubs American Legion Baseball team bounced back from Thursday's mercy-rule loss in Iron Mountain by beating Gaylord, 6-4, Friday afternoon in at Gaylord St. Mary High School. Hunter Lancour pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing only one earned run, but he needed the Cubs to rally for three runs in the sixth inning to get the lead.

Lancour reached the 105-pitch limit in the seventh inning when Quinn Schultz singled to right field, but Bon LaChance was able to get the final out to preserve the Escanaba win.

Lancour got help from his defense in the first inning when Quinn Schultz smacked a double with one out. Chris Koscalniak hit a deep fly ball to center field that was caught by Eli Gardner.

Gardner rifled a throw to third baseman Jack McEvers for the double play to end the inning.

The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when McEvers drew a one-out walk and Nick Chiu followed with a pop fly double to center field. Jarrett Olsen drove in one run with a ground ball to second base, and Trent Turchin followed with an RBI single to put the Cubs up by two.

Gaylord tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Sam Siercely and Garrett Purdy led off with base hits, and one run scored on a dropped fly ball in left field. The second scored on an RBI single by Carlos Gausetto.

Escanaba regained the lead in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by LaChance, but Gaylord tied the game in the fourth inning when Lancour walked the first two men he faced, and then allowed an RBI single by Gausetto. A runner was thrown out after rounding third base too far, however, chased down by Chase Cloutier.

Gaylord took the lead in the fifth inning when Austin Vanderveer singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Koscalniak sacrifice fly.

The Cubs, however, came back in the top of the sixth inning. McEvers was safe on an infield error to start the inning. Then Chiu was hit by a pitch, and that was all for pitcher Garrett Purdy as he reached his 105-pitch count.

Vanderveer came on to pitch, and he walked Olsen to load the bases. A wild pitch scored the tying run, Then Turchin hit a grounder on the infield that Vanderveer threw the ball away, and the go-ahead run came home.

Gardner followed with the RBI single to give Escanaba a 6-4 lead. The Cubs actually had the bases loaded later that inning but Johnson grounded out to end the inning.

In the seventh inning, Lancour had nine pitches left before reaching his pitch count and he almost got out of it, but Schultz got a base hit to keep the game going. But LaChance got the strikeout of Koscalniak, who will play with Lancour at Delta College this fall.

Lancour ended up allowing nine hits, four runs (one earned), striking out seven and walking two. LaChance earned the save by getting the final out.

The Cubs were outhit, 9-5, but won the game.

Escanaba improved to 7-6 on the season. Gaylord fell to 5-6-1.

The Cubs will play the Northern Michigan Patriots at 10 a.m. Saturday, and will face Gaylord again at 3:00. Escanaba wraps up its trip Sunday with a game in Sault Ste. Marie against the Soo (Ontario) Black Sox.
