NMU Hockey Wildcats Get Tie With #5 Miami
![]() OXFORD, Ohio---The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with No. 5 Miami on Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena. NMU led 2-1 after the first period before the RedHawks tied the game in the third period. Miami earned the extra CCHA standings point with a shootout win at the end of the extra session. NMU is now 4-4-2 overall and 1-3-2-0 in the CCHA. Miami is 6-2-2 and 3-2-1-1 in the conference. Sophomore forward Ryan Kesti scored his first of the season and second career goal six minutes into the opening frame to give Northern the early lead. Assisting was junior defenseman Wade Epp and freshman forward Nate Taurence for his first career point. Miami tied up the game at one with a power play goal by Sean Kuraly 12:27 into the first. NMU took the lead before the end of the period with a power play goal by junior forward Stephan Vigier at 17:47. Assisting on Vigier’s second of the season was senior forward Matt Thurber and junior defenseman CJ Ludwig. The RedHawks tied up the game with less than three minutes (17:47) left in the third when Alex Wideman found the back of the net. In the overtime, Miami generated four shots on goal and NMU had two. Austin Czarnik and Wideman scored in the shootout. Senior forward Kory Kaunisto and Vigier missed their chances for the ‘Cats. Junior goaltender Jared Coreau finished the game with 31 saves, including 15 in the second period. Jay Williams had 25 saves for Miami. NMU took eight minor penalties. The RedHawks had nine penalties for 26 minutes. Both teams were 1-for-4 on the man advantage. The ‘Cats travel back to Ohio next weekend for a meeting with the Ohio State Buckeyes. The RedHawks scored three power-play and one shorthanded goal, defeating the Wildcats 5-2 on Friday from Steve Cady Arena. NMU is now 4-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the CCHA. Miami is 6-2-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the conference. The series finale is at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams traded first period goals. Miami got on the board first with a power-play goal by Matthew Caito 10:37 in. NMU sophomore forward DJ Vandercook scored his first career goal at 13:31 of the first to tie the game. Assisting on the goal was junior forward Stephan Vigier and sophomore forward Ryan Daugherty. The RedHawks scored four straight goals, including two in the second period and two in the third. Riley Barber gave Miami the 2-1 lead 4:51 into the second on the man advantage. Cody Murphy made it a two-goal lead with less than five minutes (15:25) remaining in the second on the power play. Curtis McKenzie scored midway through the third (10:33) and Austin Czarnik added a shorthanded goal at 14:38 for the 5-1 lead. Junior defenseman CJ Ludwig scored his first of the season on the man advantage with less than five minutes (15:38) left in the third. Sophomore forward Reed Seckel and sophomore defenseman Mitch Jones assisted on Ludwig’s second of his career. Junior Jared Coreau had 24 saves on the evening. Freshman Michael Doan added seven saves as he relieved Coreau with 9:27 left in the third. Jay Williams had 18 saves for the RedHawks. NMU took 10 minor penalties and Miami was 3-for-8 on the power play. Miami had nine minor penalties and NMU was 1-for-7 on the man advantage. |
