ROAD WARRIORS: Tech Hockey Wins Again, 2-1

This story was written by MTU Athletics

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. –
Michigan Tech earned a WCHA sweep of Ferris State after a 2-1 victory Tuesday at Ewigleben Ice Arena. The Huskies improved to 12-5-1 overall and 4-2 in the WCHA after winning their fourth straight game and wrapping up a seven-game road trip with a 5-2 record.

Tech defeated FSU 6-4 a week ago on the front end of the WCHA series. The two teams meet this weekend at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena for the annual Winter Carnival series.

"Down the road, it's going to be a game that we look back on and understand the growth that we had in a number of different situations," Tech assistant coach Chris Brooks said. "It's a tired group and you have to be mentally strong when you're tired. The guys stuck with it and worked through it."

Justin Misiak
buried his third goal in the last four games 7:36 after puck drop to get the Huskies on the board. He made a move across the crease to his forehand for his fourth goal of the season from Brian Halonen and Trenton Bliss.

"That line controlled the play below the offensive zone dots," added Brooks. "They were excellent tonight. They were the best line in the game and built momentum for us at different points in the game."

The teams battled back and forth for the next 40:00 before Blais Richartz made it 2-0 at 13:16 of the third for his first collegiate goal. Halonen dug the puck out of the corner to Tyler Rockwell at the point. Richartz entered the zone and blasted a one-timer through traffic for the eventual game-winner.

"He got out on a late line change and found a soft spot," Brooks said. "I'm not sure the goaltender ever saw it through traffic."

Ferris (1-15-1, 0-11-1 WCHA) made it interesting in the final stages of the game, peppering Blake Pietila with seven shots in the final 4:00.

Jake Transit was finally able to break the seal with eight seconds remaining to make it a one-goal game. Blake Evennou was credited with an assist on the scramble goal.

FSU led the game in shots 30-23. Pietila stopped 29 shots for his ninth win of the season, making nine saves in the first, eight in the second, and 12 in the third. Logan Stein finished with 21 saves for the home team.

The teams combined for five minor penalties. Tech was 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and 0-for-2 on the power play.

The puck drops at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 6:07 p.m. Saturday in Houghton. The Huskies and Bulldogs will play for the MacInnes Trophy.
