Gladstone Volleyball Team Goes 2-2 In Houghton
 HOUGHTON---Gladstone Braves volleyball team did not make it out of pool play Saturday at a tournament in Houghton. The Braves beat Ishpeming and Dollar Bay by 2-0 scores, but lost to Calumet and L'Anse, also by 2-0 scores. Gladstone finished the tournament wth a 2-2 record. Braves Coach Liz Gendron was happy with the win over Ishpeming, calling it a "strong start" to the tournament. But as the day went on, she said the team's play tapered off, especially in the loss to L'Anse. "For some reason, we couldnt do one thing correct," Gendron said. "We missed almost every serve, except for Mackenzie Gay. We couldnt pass the ball to our setter at all, which of course means that our hitters didnt get set. And when they did, we were so off our timing that it was ugly." Gendron was happier with her team's play against the powerhouse Calumet Copper Kings, even though the result was also a 2-0 loss. "Had we not given them so many points on missed serves, we would have pulled out set two," Gendron said. "Our hitting and blocking did well. Callie (Jensen) moved the ball around well to the hitters and played very aggressively herself." "She really made some smart decisions." And as for the match with Dollar Bay? "Really struggled at the service line and stayed unfocused throughout the match," she said. "Never really got a run going. The girls need to stay aggressive against all types of teams. We need to set our own pace and stay with it no matter what the other team does." Houghton ended up beating Calumet in the final, 2-0. Gladstone is back on its home court Tuesday night with a Great Northern Conference match against Marquette. |
