Midland Berryhill Cruises Past Escanaba In Opener
![]() ESCANABA---The Escanaba Cubs hung in there for a while, but eventually lost their first game at the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament Thursday night at Al Ness Field. The Cubs faced last year’s state and regional champion…and World Series runner-up…Midland Berryhill, and fell behind by three runs in the first inning and lost, 11-1. ![]() Escanaba scored in the bottom of the first inning when Noah Lancour walked, got bunted to second by Hunter Lancour, and eventually scored on a passed ball and a throwing error. But the Cubs couldn’t do much offensively against Midland pitcher Brendan Beaver. He walked five batters (one in each of the first five innings) but the Cubs had a hard time hitting the ball. They had no hits until Hunter Lancour’s two-out hit in the fifth inning broke up the no-hitter. The only other Escanaba hit was a pop fly single by Jake LaFave in the sixth inning. Beaver struck out eight Cub batters, and reliever Jacob Stone struck out the side in the sixth inning. Midland got three hits and a sacrifice fly from leadoff batter Gage Chapin. Connor Moe had a single, RBI double, and scored twice. Cooley ended up 4-for-4 and scored twice. Escanaba takes on Sault Ste. Marie at 8:00 on Friday as the tournament continues. Midland will face Marinette at 12:30 on Friday. Click the thumbnails in the ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS box above to see photos, videos taken by Nate Belleville. |
