High School Football Season Enters Dramatic Week
![]() GWINN---The Upper Peninsula high school football season comes to a close this weekend with some teams jockeying for playoff position, and others simply saying goodbye to theirs. And still other teams are trying to make the playoffs for the first time in many years. In that last category is the Gwinn Model Towners. Coach Dion Brown has helped to turn the Model Towner program around, behind the steady play of quarterback Kevin Roberts and the running back duo of Hunter Bachman (pictured above) and Chris Bosworth. Gwinn has not made the playoffs since 1999, but this season, the team has a 5-3 record heading into Week Nine. But for the Model Towners to make the post-season, they will have to beat the defending state champion Ishpeming Hematities, who are down on their luck this year with a 3-4 record, but are still a dangerous team under Coach Jeff Olsen. If the Hematites win, they could sneak into the playoffs with a 4-4 record, and it is also possible that Gwinn could make the playoffs with a 5-4 record. This is a Thursday night game. Also Thursday night, Negaunee will try to complete a perfect 9-0 season with a game against Westwood. The Patriots are 2-6 and will be saying goodbye to its senior class in this one. And in eight-man football Thursday night, a pair of playoff-bound teams will square off on a neutral field. The 7-1 Forest Park Trojans, in their first year of eight-man ball, will take on the 6-2 Cedarville Trojans. This game will be played in Engadine. A full schedule of games is set for Friday, with the big one being in the Great Northern Conference between a pair of 6-2 teams: the Escanaba Eskymos and Kingsford Flivvers. Another interesting game Friday features backyard neighbors Iron Mountain (6-2) and Norway (7-1). We will post all of the scores this weekend, and then on Sunday night, check back for all of the playoff pairings as they're announced on the MHSAA Selection Sunday program. |
