Marquette Edges Escanaba In Frosh Football, 21-18
![]() ESCANABA----The Escanaba Eskymos and Marquette Redmen played for the second time this season in freshmen football Thursday, and it was another close game. After playing to a tie last time, the Redmen won this one with a late touchdown, 21-18, at the Escanaba Athletic Field. Joe Ostrowsky threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to John Thomson with 1:20 left in the game to give the Redmen the lead. On the ensuing kick-off, a line drive kick then bounced off an Eskymo up-man and Marquette recovered the ball at the 50 yard-line to effectively end the game. It was quite a battle between Ostrowsky and Escanaba quarterback Josh Bruntjens. Bruntjens had a 42-yard run to put the Eskymos ahead, 6-0, but Ostrowsky responded with a 67-yard scamper, and after the extra point kick, it was 7-6 Marquette. The fourth quarter saw a punch, counterpunch on the scoreboard. Bruntjens had an electrifying 73-yard touchdown run, breaking several tackles along the sideline. That gave Escanaba a 12-7 lead with 11:11 left in the game. The Eskymos missed the two-point play, however. Marquette came back with Ostrowsky finding Collin Hicks for a 43-yard touchdown pass and catch. The extra point kick made it 14-12, with 7:29 left in the fourth quarter. The Eskymos came back with another nice drive, with Bruntjens hitting Spencer Brunelle with a 29-yard pass to the Marquette two yard-line. Vinnie Haslow ran in the short touchdown, giving the Eskymos the lead with 3:55 to play. Another missed two-point play, however. Marquette came up field, and Ostrowsky threw a strike to Thomson to produce the final touchdown. The Redmen made all three PAT kicks, and that was the difference in the game. Escanaba's freshmen (5-1-1) travel to Menominee next Thursday, and then closes the regular season with a home game against Kingsford on Oct. 20.
