APPLETON, Wis.---The Gladstone High School baseball program now has a junior varsity team. The JV Braves played their first games on Saturday at Appleton North, Wis., and lost both games, 13-3 and 7-1.
But Coach Dale Hongisto's team did have uits moments.
In the first game, Gladstone scored two runs in the first inning and another run in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Carson Shae scored the first-ever JV Braves run, while Quinn Downey scored the second run. Freshman pitcher Jared Crow got off to a strong start, but eventually tired, and the Lightning grabbed the lead in the fourth inning.
The wheels fell off for the Braves as they gave up nine runs in the fifth inning and lost that first-ever game on the mercy rule, 13-3. In the second game, the JV Braves scored the first run in the opening inning, but Appleton North gradually built a lead and won. 7-1.
