Escanaba EMP Midgets Split Games In Ontonagon
![]() This story was provided by Jodi Westerberg. ONTONAGON - It was a long and winding trek up to Ontonogan for the Escanaba EMP Midget BB hockey team, as they split a pair of CUP League games on Saturday, against the Ontonagon Midget BB hockey team.
EMP lost the first game 7 to 2.
In the first period, Adam Lanctot scored just 22 seconds into the game, assisted by Alex Jones. Michael Turunen scored next for Ontonogan, with Jones, getting his second assist. It was 2 to 0, Ontonag0n, at the end of the first period.
In the second period, Ontonagon added four more goals, to their lead, before EMP got on the board. Garret Parker scored, assisted by Anton Olszewski. Then Lanctot scored unassisted. Parker scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Lanctot.
Jones scored next for Ontonagon, with Lanctot, getting his second assist of the game. EMP, on their power play, seized the moment, as Noah Olsen, patiently set up a pass to Spencer Murray, who fired it in, for their first goal of the game. At the end of the second period, it was 6 to 1 Ontonagon over EMP.
In the third period, Ontonagon's Tyler Dean scored, assisted by Eddie Ling. Lucas Weinert scored one more goal for EMP, assisted by Aaron Young.
Ontonag0n won 7 to 2. EMP had 10 minutes of penalties in the game. Ontonagon had 18 minutes of penalties in the game.
EMP bounced back to win the second game 7 to 6.
Ontonagon scored the first two goals. The first goal scored by Lanctot, assisted by Turunen. Their second goal was scored by Jones, assisted by Ling. Alex Valentine got EMP on the board, early in this game, scoring unassisted. But then Jones scored again for Ontonagon, assisted by Parker.
EMP's Christer Carne said enough was enough, and scored two quick goals, within 27 seconds of each other, tying the game 3 to 3. The first goal was unassisted. Murray contributed with the assist on the second goal.
Ontonagon's Jones, scored his third goal of the game, a hattrick, assisted by Ling, his second assist of the game. EMP added two more goals, with Weinert scoring a beautiful backhanded goal, off of assists from Valentine and Olsen. Young was then in the right place, in front of the net, to score off a nice pass from Zeke Strand. At the end of the second period, it was 5 to 4 EMP over Ontonagon.
In the third period, both teams traded goals, back and forth. Ling scored for Ontonagon, assists coming from Olszewski and Parker, his second assist of the game.
EMP answered back with Carne getting his third goal of the game, a hattrick, assisted by goalie Garrett Parlett and Young. Ontonagon then tied up the game 6 to 6, with Dean's goal, assisted by Lanctot. Weinert scored the winning goal for EMP, his second goal of the game, assisted by Jacob Lafave. EMP held off Ontonagon's attempt to tie the score, by pulling their goalie, with less than a minute to play. EMP won 7 to 6.
Both teams had 8 minutes of penalties in the game.
EMP is back in CUP League action next weekend with 4 games. Saturday's games are home against Calumet at Noon and 3 p.m. Sunday's games are in Manistique at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
