Rockets Rally Past Trojans To Take Alliance Lead

DETOUR---Jake Pearson did what Jake Pearson often does Friday night when his Rapid River Rockets faced the Cedaville Trojans with first place on the line in the Bridge Alliance Conference.

But it was a play by a different Rocket player that got the ball rolling.

The Trojans raced out to a 13-0 lead on their adopted home field, but the Rocket defense forced a punt. David Hough got the ball and raced up-field for an 80-yard punt return. Then Pearson scored on a short run, and the Rockets were in business.

Pearson rushed for 331 yards on 39 carries and scored six touchdowns as the Rockets rolled past the Trojans, 48-25.

Pearson also threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Michael Casey in the second quarter as the Rockets turned a 13-0 deficit into a 28-19 lead.

"That punt return was huge. It really changed the game," said Rapid River Assistant Coach Paul Brunngraeber. "Jake had a huge block on the play, and then Huffy did the rest."

Pearson completed four of five passes for 82 yards to go along with his rushing totals.

Overall, the Rockets rushed for 383 yards on 53 carries as a team.

"Up front, we just wore them down," Brunngraeber said. "Our offensive line was good. And Jake was the difference again. We had a good week of practice, and we were confident coming into this game."

Rapid River improved to 6-0 on the season while Cedarville dropped to 5-1. The Rockets have two games left in the regular season: at home next Friday night against Superior Central, and then on the road the following Friday night against Bellaire.

The Rapid River-Superior Central game will be Rockets Homecoming next Friday night. Kick off is set for 7:00.
