Detroit Country Day Tops Mistake-Prone Eskymos
![]() ESCANABA---The Escanaba Eskymos competed well with a downstate powerhouse football team on Saturday, but made too many big mistakes and lost to Detroit Country Day, 34-7, at the Escanaba Athletic Field. The Yellow Jackets took advantage of a "Pick-Six" late in the second quarter, and then a fumble deep in Eskymo territory was costly in the third. ![]() That pass came after the Eskymos had forced the Yellow Jackets into a 4th-and-10. The Eskymos came back early in the second quarter as Cam Beversluis scored on an 11-yard run. T.J. Myrick's extra point cut the Escanaba deficit to 16-7. But the Yellow Jackets, with three players who will play NCAA-I football next year, marched right down the field, mixing the pass and run effectively. Wiegers threw a perfect ball to receiver Maurice Ways, who got behind two Eskymo defenders to make the 25-yard TD catch with 3:33 left in the half. It was 22-7. It looked like the Eskymos would get that touchdown back, however, as quarterback Travis Heller used the gusty wind at his back to loft one along the sidelines for Beversluis. Beversluis...who is as sure-handed of a receiver as you see...had a tough day with a couple of drops, including this one, which likely would have been a touchdown. ![]() But on third down inside the Yellow Jacket ten yard-line, Heller's pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage. It fell into the hands of a Country Day defender, who raced 91 yards in the other direction for a devastating "Pick Six" interception and touchdown. As the clock reached zero for the half, Country Day had a 28-7 lead. At halftime, five people were inducted into the Escanaba Eskymo Football Walk of Fame: Mike Cvengros, Dan Flynn, Justin Gluesing, Jim Pinar, and Kevin Young. The second half was uneventful, as the only score came when Country Day recovered an Eskymo fumble deep in Escanaba territory. Both teams then subbed freely. Escanaba won Saturday's junior varsity game over Country Day, 19-14. Escanaba (1-4) travels to Menominee next Friday night. The game time has been changed: kickoff is now 8:00 ET. Detroit Country Day is now 2-3. Click the thumbnails in the ARTICLE HIGHLIGHT box above to see video highlights and photos from the game. ![]() |
