Homecoming Smackdown!! Eskymos Drill Redmen

ESCANABA---Travis Heller threw three long touchdown passes to lead the Escanaba Eskymos to a 35-14 win over the Marquette Redmen Friday night at the Escanaba Athletic Field. The Eskymos beat the Redmen for the third straight season, even though Marquette was 3-0 entering this game and Escanaba had lost all three of its games.

Heller ho0ked up with Cam Beversluis on two of the touchdowns....a 78-yarder in the first quarter, and a 61-yarder in the third quarter.

Both boys also had touchdowns on the ground: Heller a four-yard run in the second quarter, and Beversluis a 73-yarder in the fourth quarter. Heller also threw a 93-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to Trevan Wendrick.

To go along with the big-play offense, the Eskymos also had some big-play defense. Escanaba forced five turnovers in the game: three interceptions and two fumbles.

On one of the picks, Marquette quarterback Brett Place was knocked down and had to be taken off of the field by ambulance. It was 14-0 at the time of that play, and Esky kept rolling from there. Also, T.J. Myrick kicked five extra points for the Eskymos.

Marquette's touchdowns came on a pick-six by Larry Brunette late in the second quarter, and on a Kyle Dickinson run in the final minute of the fourth quarter.

As the game ended, the Escanaba High School students stormed the field and celebrated with the emotional Eskymo football players and coaches.

There was an interesting sub-plot to the game, as Dan Flynn returned to the Escanaba Athletic Field as an assistant coach for the Marquette Redmen. He coached the Eskymos from 1985-2011, and before that as an assistant.

Flynn retired in February, 2012, but after one year away from the game, he got back into coaching: this fall in Marquette.

Escanaba faces Detroit Country Day next Saturday at the Escanaba Athletic Field. The junior varsity game is at 11:00, and the varsity game kicks off at 2:00.
