GALLOPING AGAIN: Broncos Knock Out Gladstone

BARK RIVER---
The Bark River-Harris Broncos boys basketball team followed in the footsteps of the girls squad by posting a playoff win against a larger Great Northern Conference school Monday night. The BR-H boys beat Gladstone, 45-40, in a district tournament game three days after the girls upset Menominee. Logan Getzloff led the Broncos with 16 points.

The Braves came in with a 4-15 record, but that was done mostly against teams like Escanaba, Marquette, Kingsford, and other large schools.

The Broncos were 9-11, with most of that coming against a Class D schedule. But BR-H was able to ramp up the defense to win the first-ever basketball meeting between the two schools.

So, when does a win by a 9-11 team over a 4-15 team become an upset?

"Especially the intensity, the presses that you face, when you get to the Class B level," Getzloff said. "It amps up so fast, and the game speeds up, and you've got to contain yourself so you don't turn the ball over. It's tough because we play like three Class C teams all year in our schedule. It's tough to gauge it because the play is so much different."

Trevor Lippens scored nine points in the second half as BR-H held off several Gladstone runs.

"They're a quick team and they kept looking to run," Lippens said. "They kept coming back once we started to get a little lead on them, so that was a little frustrating, but we got 'er done in the end."

Gladstone sophomore Kaden Gibbs, the team's leading scorer all season long, had eight points in the first half but was held to zero points in the second half. Sophomore Elliot Vitito led the Braves with 11 points and senior Caden Downey closed his career with ten points.

BR-H travels to Menominee for a huge challenge Wednesday night in the semifinals against the Maroons. The game will be broadcast on FM-93.5/AM-600 and rrnsports.com.
