Kingsford Drops Tune-Up Game; Quarters Up Next
DEXTER---The Kingsford Minor Boys (age 9-10) Little League All-Star team lost for the first time on Sunday at the state tournament in Dexter, but will advance to the state quarterfinals with a 2-1 pool play record. Kingsford lost to Taylor Northwest, 20-11, after the team had already qualified for the Final Eight because of Friday and Saturday victories. In Sunday's game, the Maize and Blue had an early 2-1 lead before Taylor scored 14 runs in the third inning. Kingsford was able to fight off the mercy rule on two occassions, as Cooper Kreski had a bases-loaded double to bring home two runs in the fourth inning, and Brock Flaminio had RBI base hits in both the fourth and fifth innings. Kingsford will face Midland Northeast in the quarterfinals on Monday at 1:00 ET/12:00 CT. The semifinals are Tuesday and the state championship game is scheduled for Wednesday at noon ET/11 CT. The Upper Peninsula's other team at this state tournament, Portage Lake from Houghton/Hancock, won their final pool play game on Sunday, beating Traverse City West, 15-5.
