Cross Country Season Wraps Up With U.P. Finals
MUNISING---The high school cross country season came to an end on Saturday with the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals in Munising. Boys and girls teams from schools big and small gathered at the Pictured Rocks Golf Course for the event.

Houghton's boys and Marquette's girls won the Division One races.

In Division Two, Wakefield's boys and St. Ignace's girls were U.P. champions.

And in Division Three, Brimley and Chassell tied for the boys championship, while Chassell's girls ran to an easy team championship by 32 points.

D1 Girls: Marquette 47, Sault Ste. Marie 61, Negaunee 94

Individually, Houghton's Clayton Sayen (16:25.7) just barely nipped Marquette's Garrett Rudden by one-tenth of a second to win the Division One boys race.

Gladstone's Adam Bruce (16:39, 4th Place) and Jake Strasler (17:23.9, 8th Place) had top ten finishes. Escanaba's Justin Sampaka (17:34.3) finished tenth overall.

In the D-1 girls race, Negaunee sophomore Emily Paupore won by an incredible 33 seconds over the rest of the field, finishing in 19:22.3. Escanaba freshman Nicole Kamin finished in fourth place (20:43.6). Three Marquette girls finished in the top ten.

In Division Two, Ishpeming's Spencer Giroux won by an even wider margin in the boys race: by almost 42 full seconds over Wakefield-Marenisco's Isaiah Aili.

Westwood sophomore Tessa Lance won the D-2 girls race (20:54.2).

In Division Three, Brimley's Austin Poltkin won the boys race in 17 minutes, 9 seconds. North Central's Griffin Johnson finished ninth. In the D-3 girls race, Mid Peninsula sophomore Daisy Englund won the race in 20:31.3. Munising's Madeleine Peramaki was second, and Mid Pen freshman Landry Kiski finished fifth overall.
