Tech Women Lose On Buzzer-Beater In Ohio 73-72

FINDLAY, Ohio — Michigan Tech climbed all the way back from a 12-point deficit to start the fourth quarter into a one-point lead before Findlay made a 10-foot jumper as time expired for a 73-72 victory.
 

Danielle Blake's layup with 40 seconds left gave the Huskies a 72-71 advantage. Tech committed a non-shooting foulwith 15 seconds left, setting up the Oilers with one final chance. After a missed shot went off the side of the backboard, UF grabbed the rebound and worked it around to Haley Horstman, who pulled up for the game-winner.


"This one stings," said Tech coach Kim Cameron. "It's disappointing to give up the runs that we did, but we also got hot and got back into it. We left it all out there and didn't get it done."


Starters Lindsay Winter and Blake both picked up two fouls in the first six minutes of the game and sat the remainder of the first half. Both were catalysts for the Tech offense down the stretch.


Findlay (6-1, 3-0 GLIAC) led 39-29 at halftime, but the Huskies battled back within two (47-45) as Winter scored seven points in a two-minute span.  An 11-0 Oiler run pushed the gap back to as many as 13 and eventually 62-50 at the end of the third quarter.


Blake scored all of her 10 points in the final 12 minutes including eight in the fourth quarter to help Tech come all the way back. Her layups—one with 2:03 to go and the second with 40 ticks remaining gave the Huskies the lead each time. 


Senior Mackenzie Perttu came off the bench and played strong defense, helping the Huskies make their comeback as well.


Tech (4-3, 2-1 GLIAC) shot 53 percent from the floor. Findlay matched with 53 percent. Fourteen turnovers by the Huskies led to 16 Oilers points.


Morgan Anderson, who hit five 3-pointers, tied for game-high scoring honors with 17.Kylie Moxley also had 17 plus a game-high 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Horstman matched it with 17 for UF including the game winner. 


Michigan Tech will look to bounce back on Sunday, when it travels to play at Wayne State. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
