Eskymos Can't Hold Early Lead Against Big Rapids
ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School football team raced to a 17-0 lead in their Division Four state playoff game Friday night against the Big Rapids Cardinals. But the Eskymos could not score again, and lost as the Cardinals rallied for a 21-17 win. Escanaba had won three straight games to close the regular season in emotional fashion, and took advantage of a strong schedule to earn a home playoff game. Early on, that looked like an advantage for the Eskymos. Logan Lamb and Breyden Papineau each scored on touchdown runs, and Paul Carne returned for a neck injury to kick a 26-yard field goal. Escanaba had a 17-0 lead in the second quarter. The lead didn't last. The Cardinals (7-3) scored a touchdown late in the second quarter, and then took control of the second half with two more scores. The Eskymos had one last chance with the football in the final two minutes, but could not get the winning score. Escanaba finishes its season with a 5-5 record. And thoughts of what might have been. Big Rapids will travel to Remus Chippewa Hills for a second round game next Friday. Click the thumbnails in the ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS box to see game photos taken by Mary Gauthier. |
